Message from the Board

Welcome to the Saturday Scholars ProgramÔ Foundation’s website.  I am delighted and honored to chair the board of directors for the Saturday ScholarsÔ Program Foundation, Inc. for two reasons.

I am delighted because I have the opportunity to affiliate with a vision and passion of a friend that is also true to me.  The founder of the Saturday Scholars program and its foundation, Mr. James Varney Coleman, strongly believes that education is the gateway to success and helping someone get there is the most impacting way.  Mr. Coleman is against “Social Promotion” and “Retention” of students.  He believes that the only true way is to help tutor, motivate and mentor students so they can succeed in their academic quest.  His mission is in alignment with the U.S.A. Department of Education & President George W. Bush’s Gear Up…“No child left behind” and NAACP & NCLR …“Success in school equal success in life.”

I am honored to serve with such a national and diverse board, which is committed to supporting Mr. Coleman in being a part of the solution to our national educational mission to “Leave No Child Behind.

You have heard the clarion calls from two of our most outstanding leaders, Texas Governor Rick Perry and President George W. Bush, inviting each of us to volunteer our time as tutors and mentors to a child in order to make sure that “No child in our educational system is left behind” because “Success In School = Success In Life”; and to help build a better Texas and a better America for generations yet to come.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and the founder& CEO of The Saturday ScholarsÔ Program Foundation, Inc., a 501©3 Publicly Funded Organization, we cordially invite you to be a part of the solution, be a  “Partner For Excellence In Education” sponsor; a volunteer tutor & mentor or an individual donor or in-kind donor.

Your sponsorship or gift will enable The Saturday ScholarsÔ Program Foundation, Inc to coordinate and provide the Saturday Scholars Program, a FREE bundled program of tutoring, mentoring, nurturing, motivational and role modeling, primarily to elementary and middle/junior high schools where:

·         50 or more percent of the student population is African American, Asian or Hispanic

·         50 or more percent of the student population is on a lunch program.

This is not a startup program.  With your sponsorship or gift, you are joining a team that has been making a difference for over 11 years now.  In fact, Mr. James V. Coleman was a winner of the “2000 Governor’s Volunteer Award” winner in Texas. President George W. Bush (then Governor Bush) during an appearance at the 2000 National Council of LaRAZA Convention in San Diego, California, congratulated Mr. Coleman (back stage shortly before departing for yet another campaign 2000 stop) for the award and added that it was a very “Big Award.”  Mr. Coleman often refers to this award as a validation that he, his board of directors and thousands of volunteers were doing the right thing for our country, our children and our future. With your sponsorship, gifts or in kind donations, he has vowed to continue.

Also, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) in 2002 selected the Saturday ScholarsÔ Program as one of its 12 model programs supporting its TGAP (Texans Getting Academically Prepared) lofty goals. Mr. James V. Coleman, Founder and CEO, has thus challenged the Board of Directors of the Saturday ScholarsÔ Program Foundation, Inc., to help raise the necessary funds in order to:

·         SUCCESSFULLY launch and implement the Saturday ScholarsÔ Program for generations to come

·         Raise over $100,000 for its 11th Annual Award Celebration on Saturday, April 26, 2003.

·         Expand this award-winning program in Texas and throughout the United States to reach more needy students.

·         Meet an immediate demand … with TEA Video sent to all 7000 campuses in Texas, Mr. Coleman is anticipating a 10% take, that’s 700 schools statewide that might want to deploy the Saturday ScholarsÔ Program on their respective school campuses. We need your support in meeting this demand.

·         Establish a National Headquarter office in Dallas, Texas with a paid staff including the Founder & CEO, an Executive Director, State Directors, Volunteer and Campus Coordinators; in order to effectively manage our efforts and the thousands of volunteers.

Involving more than 1500 volunteer tutors and mentors and now in its 11th academic year, the Saturday Scholars Program has reached and impacted over 22,000 CHILDREN within the Dallas/Fort Worth and Tampa Florida metropolitan area.  On April 26th 2003, we will celebrate 11 years of service to our children, our communities and to Texas and our nation. Please join as us an event sponsor or let discuss the greater opportunity of being “Partner For Excellence In Education”.

What’s in it for you? Your sponsorship and/or partnership will allow your brand to generate awareness of your company as a good corporate citizen amongst viable consumers, investors and employees. You may promote and present the Saturday Scholars Program to your employees, customers and investors as a volunteer initiative you support and solicit their involvement in the communities you serve.  Additionally your gifts are tax deductible because the Saturday ScholarsÔ Program Foundation, Inc.  is a 501(c) 3 publicly funded organization.
